I really agree with him. I'm all for calling all "marriages" "civil unions," and all having the same federal, state and social rights. The rites themselves can continue to be individually customized by taste, tradition, religion, etc. "Marriage" ceremonies can still be done as a religious rite. In many parts of the world, the state does require a civil union for couples and people blend that into a church ceremony of marriage when they want to.
