moving forward

Once social change begins it cannot be reversed. You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore.

Cesar Chavez

I love this: You cannot uneducate.

When I was teaching high school, kids would ask me why they had to read. I told them that if they could read there was nothing that they couldn't learn to do.

I wonder how many of them believed me. Even one would have been worth it.

I am sure that more than one of them believed you. I am also sure that many of those who did not believe you at the time discovered later that you were telling the truth.

It's so interesting to read this the day after we get back from Belize where kids leave school after eighth grade and the schools are so poor - even the church based ones. One of the things I found myself thinking about was how very fortunate our kids are to have the access to education they have.
