dangerous unselfishness

Let us develop a kind of dangerous unselfishness.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

What would that look like?

Give me your best shot.

First of all, those orange boy babies are adorable, adorable. Secondly, dangerous unselfishness sounds sounds scary AND inspiring. Why am I scared? Perhaps I'll lose something? Perhaps I won't get something? Raises interesting questions.... The person who inspires me most around this is my husband. I am blessed to know him. Like us all, he's inconsistent and imperfect, but when he gets this right, he's awesome. He gives of his time, and his money, and his efforts not withstanding his own personal loss or gain.

Dangerous unselfishness. I'm stumped! Is that what it is when a firefighter stays too long in a burning building in hope of getting the child out in time? Or a mother standing in front of her child when a mugger threatens them on the street? Perhaps in the context of the Civil Rights Movement, it is sitting down at the counter of a diner, knowing you risk your life.

I feel like I'm missing something. Just around the corner, just at the edge of my awareness, something much more to the point. Do you know what it is, Wanda?

Dangerous unselfishness is when we dare to forgive. It is when we let go of ego and know that we are all connected. It is when we are unafraid to be the souls that we were created to be. It is when we risk encountering darkness in order that we may share the light. LOVE having a concise term for all of that.
