mosquito

(clematis...not mosquito)

Went for a couple mile hike today. Got eaten by mosquitoes.

Does anyone know what mosquitoes go for that would make them love me so much? I am their foie gras...their molten lava cake...their soup to nuts.

I went to the Audubon Society and hiked the trails. Everywhere there are signs about protecting the wildlife. I wondered about that as I was squishing mosquitoes. One of them was full of blood--my blood. I didn't feel too bad for that one.

What do you think? Was I supposed to protect them, too?

Purple! Wonderful. I have heard that wearing certain shades of blue will attract mosquitoes. Perfumes, soaps, scented lotions--some of those attract them as well.

On the other hand, some people just seem juicier. When my children were little, they and their father were mosquito magnets. They would power on the deet sprays and ointments, rub it all over their clothes, even in their hair, to no avail. Meanwhile, I would slap away the occasional skeeter, be annoyed at them for buzzing my head, but never get more than a bite or two compared to the welts covering the rest of my family.

Noseeums? Now that's another story. They loved me.

I think the "rule" is if it is capable of flinching when you come towards it, you aren't supposed to kill it. I've never seen a mosquito flinch, have you?

It's a particularly bad year for mosquitoes, according to sources who follow such things. I've been bitten more this year than my whole adult life previously - they generally leave me alone - so I'm inclined to agree with the experts.

I love the trails around Audubon! Did you see any great birds?
